Nash Street was formed in 1996 as the "Goat
Ropers." The original members were Norman
Mellin -director, Hannah Melby, Chris Elam,
Stacey Phillips, and Kira Martin. Their ages
ranged from 7-13. They changed their name in
2001 to Nash Street since that is where they
gathered every time for practice and it seemed
to be a name that had a catchy sound with a
little hope of Nashville in the title.
Originating in the Northeast Mississippi town
of Starkville, Nash Street now consists of
Daniel Hare (upright bass), Hannah Melby
(fiddle/vocals), Jason Graham (rhythm
guitar/vocals), Caroline Melby
(mandolin/vocals), and Clay Lezon (lead
guitar). These young people, all college or high
school students, bring a lot of talent to the
scene with their own version of old time,
bluegrass, folk, country, and blues music.
Nash Street plays a variety of events ranging
from church gatherings and live radio
broadcasts to traditional bluegrass festivals,
Mississippi State events, concerts, and private
parties. They have performed on the Mornin'
Show with Kay Bain, the Legends of Bluegrass
Festival, the Pickin' and Ginnin' Festival in
Rayville, Louisiana, the Ozark Folk Center in
Mountain View, Arkansas, and Tim McGraw's
charity concert - Swampstock, in Louisiana.
Nash Street had the honor of opening for
Rhonda Vincent, the female bluegrass vocalist
of the year, in January 2003. They recorded
their second CD last summer at Ricky Skaggs'
studio in Nashville . In October 2004, the band
opened for Tim McGraw's annual
“Swampstock”, an annual concert Tim puts on
to benefit his hometown of Rayville, Louisiana .
Other honors for Nash Street include the talent
award at the Mississippi State Fair where they
competed against 160 contestants.
Nash Street is becoming one of the most
noted sounds in Mississippi . Their stage
presence and ability to connect with the
audience at such young ages makes them
attractive to the music industry and likely to be
considered emerging young artists of today.
Look for Nash Street in the days and months to
come and watch their growth in the
entertainment business for they will quite
possibly become a household name.
