South 14 has been playing formally as a band
for about 6 years. It all started with Mark and Lyn
getting together to pick and has evolved into
what it is today (and that's not a bad thing!) The
band thrives on the music of Monroe, Flatt &
Scruggs, Martin, and Stanley but also hits the
high spots with music from groups like
Newgrass Revival.
The band loves playing for folks and sure loves
the driving style of traditional bluegrass. The
band is also versed in traditional bluegrass
gospel, fiddle tunes, and old time music as well.
Mark Edwards - Banjo & Vocals: Mark hails from
Yellville, Arkansas and has been playing music
most all his life. His banjo playing has been
influenced by Scruggs, Mills, Crowe and Adams.
You'll also hear Mark singing a little baritone in
the mix as well.
Joe Batterton - Bass & Vocals: When you hear
Joe sing, you'll say, "that's bluegrass." Holding
down the bass playin' and the lead and tenor
singin' for the band is his forte. Joe is also a
pretty durn good songwriter too. He specializes
in "killin' songs". Might be because he used to
be a prison guard, we don't know. Joe is
originally from Black Rock, Arkansas but calls
Yellville his home.
Nathan Patton - Mandolin & Vocals: There isn't
anything Nathan would rather do than play his
mandolin. He's been influenced by Monroe like
most mandolin players but also hangs his hat
on the style of Mike Compton. Nathan also
takes a lead in the singing department every
once in a while too, and you might catch him
singing a little bass on a gospel number.
Currently living in Conway, AR, Nathan is
originally from Yellville.
Lyn Baker - Guitar & Vocals: Lyn is like the other
boys in the band: he just loves to play that drivin'
bluegrass. Influences on rhythm guitar include
Jimmy Martin and modern guys like Tyminski.
Lyn does a fair amount of the lead and tenor
singing and does a little song writing on the
side. Yellville has been his home from day one
and proud of it too.
Hank Beaver - Fiddle: Hank can do just about all
of it in a bluegrass band, but we've got him
playin' the fiddle for us. And the young man
excels at it. You won't be disappointed in what
your hear. Hank has been playing for about 5 or
6 years and he's only made it to 18. Bluegrass
is in his blood. Hank hails from downtown Eros,
Arkansas (pronounced E Ross).
